Hiking Elopements in Queenstown: The Ultimate Adventure Love Story

If you and your partner are all about the great outdoors, epic views, and like to do things a little differently, then listen up... Yes, I'm talking about hiking elopements in Queenstown. Trust me, this is not your average walk down the aisle—it's a trek into the extraordinary.

I’ve had the pleasure of photographing many hiking elopements, and as a fellow outdoor lover and avid hiker, I have plenty of tips and tricks to help make your adventure wedding dreams come to life.

Planning a hiking elopement is easier than you might think. Let’s dive into it…

Why Hiking Elopements?

Forget traditional venues with four walls and a chandelier. With a hiking elopement, your backdrop is the great outdoors. It’s a chance to exchange your vows in a place where the air is fresh, the views are breathtaking, and every step feels like a new adventure. It's intimate, it's personal, and it's totally unique.

And here's the best part: it's just the two of you, a celebrant and photographer. No seating arrangements, no distant relatives asking awkward questions or complaining about the food, just you, your partner, and the beauty of Queenstown.

Why Queenstown?

Queenstown is New Zealand's adventure capital, tucked away in the Southern Alps. Think soaring mountains, crystal-clear lakes, and more trails than you can count. It's basically a giant playground for outdoor enthusiasts. So if you and your partner are the type who'd rather trade tuxedos and formal gowns for hiking boots and puffer jackets, you've come to the right place.

Top Trails for Eloping in Queenstown

Wondering where to start? Queenstown is teeming with epic trails that are perfect for an elopement. Here are a few favorites:

  • Ben Lomond Track: If you want panoramic views of Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables, this is your trail. The hike can take 4-6 hours, depending on your pace, but the scenery at the summit is so worth it.

  • Queenstown Hill: A shorter hike that still packs a visual punch. The trail is about 2-3 hours round trip, making it ideal if you're planning a quick ceremony and some stunning photos.

  • Lake Alta: A short walk from The Remarkables ski base lies Lake Alta, a stunning alpine lake surrounded by huge jagged peaks. Lake Alta is a great option for couples who would prefer a shorter walk but don’t want to sacrifice the views. Allow up to 2 hours round trip.

  • Routeburn Track: For couples who want to turn their elopement into a multi-day adventure, the Routeburn Track is a top pick. The landscapes are insanely beautiful, with waterfalls, alpine meadows, and snow-capped peaks.

  • Dart Valley: This stunning hike starts in beautiful New Zealand native forest. Around an hour in, on a relatively flat track, you’ll arrive at a gorgeous alpine meadow, complete with wildflowers, streams, towering mountains and glaciers. The Dart Valley is truly a special place.

    Beyond Queenstown

  • Hooker Valley: a 3.5-hour drive from Queenstown brings you to Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park, here lies the iconic Hooker Valley trail. This 3-hour round trip trail winds up an alpine valley surrounded by NZ’s biggest mountains. The track finishes at Hooker Lake and Glacier, with epic views of NZ’s tallest peak.

  • Mueller Hut: This is one for the more adventurous couples. Also in Aoraki/Mt Cook National Park, Mueller Hut sits 1100m above the National Park. Getting here is no easy feat, a steep track winds up the side of Mt Olivier, with epic views around every corner. Around 4 hours of climbing will bring you to the famous red, Mueller Hut. Needless to say, the views are out of this world!

  • Gertrude Saddle: Fiordland National Park, home to the world-famous Milford Sound. Fiordland is unlike anywhere else in NZ, and Gertrude Saddle perfectly encapsulates this incredible part of the world. A 2-3 hour hike from Milford Road brings you to the stunning saddle, overlooking the epic Fiordland rain forest and towing granite peaks. The perfect place to tie the knot.

Tips for Planning a Hiking Elopement in Queenstown

  • Timing is Everything: Queenstown has four distinct seasons, so pick your date wisely. If you want clear trails and warmer weather, aim for late spring or summer. For snowy vibes, winter is your best bet.

  • Pack Smart: Hiking gear is a must, even for a wedding. Sturdy boots, weather-appropriate clothing, and a good backpack are essential. Don't forget a compact first-aid kit and plenty of water.

  • Hire a Local Photographer: Trust me, you're going to want photos of this epic day. I specializes in outdoor and adventure shoots—I know the best spots and how to capture your moment without it feeling staged. I also allow a backup date in case of adverse weather on your preferred date.

  • Hire a celebrant: Here in Queenstown, we’re lucky to have some amazing and adventurous, outdoor loving marriage celebrants. Your celebrant will handle all of the legal paperwork and provide you with a beautiful and heartfelt ceremony.

  • Permits and Legalities: Make sure you have the right permits for your chosen location, and check with local authorities such as DOC about any specific requirements for getting married on conservation land. This is also something that I can assist with.

Ready to Take the Leap?

If you're craving an elopement that's as unique as your love story, Queenstown is calling your name. The scenery is unparalleled, the adventure is non-stop, and the memories will last a lifetime. So grab your boots, pack your bags, and get ready to say "I do" on top of the world. It’s not just a hike—it’s the start of the greatest journey of all.

Eloping in Queenstown on a Budget.

Saying “I Do” these days comes with quite a financial commitment, but choosing to elope and using a few cost-effective planning tools, can lower your wedding expenses to a more desirable number.

A budget-friendly elopement does not mean you have to give up your ideal day. It gives you the opportunity to make sure the day is exactly how you picture it.

If standing atop a breathtaking mountain peak with the love of your life by your side is your dream scenario, then eloping in Queenstown, New Zealand, might be the perfect choice for you. Known as the "Adventure Capital of the World," Queenstown offers a stunning backdrop for an intimate and budget-friendly elopement. In this blog, we'll guide you through the steps to plan a memorable and cost-effective elopement in this picturesque destination.

Set a realistic budget

Before you start planning, determine how much you want to, or can spend. It doesn’t need to be an exact number, but choosing a minimum and a maximum will help. Set up a spreadsheet with each item and an estimate of what you want to spend. The biggest costs will be a photographer, videographer, helicopter (not necessary with so many scenic options accessible by car or on foot), food and drinks. Elopements are known for their cost-effectiveness, but it's crucial to establish how much you're willing to spend. This will help you prioritize your expenses and make informed decisions throughout the planning process.

Choosing When to Say “I Do”

In the past wedding season has always been spring and summer, however, now that more couples are choosing elopements, it’s possible to plan your date in any season. Queenstown experiences its peak tourist season during the summer months (December to February) when prices for accommodations and activities tend to be higher. Consider eloping during the shoulder seasons (spring or autumn) when the weather is still pleasant, but prices are more budget-friendly.

Another great way to save is by having a midweek wedding. Opting for a weekday elopement can be more budget-friendly than a weekend celebration, and you'll likely have more flexibility with your chosen date and time.

Choosing Where to Say “I Do”

Queenstown is renowned for its stunning landscapes and your ceremony backdrop can reflect this. Choose a free ceremony location like Jack’s Point, Seven Mile Delta, or Lake Hayes to save on venue costs. Hire a few chairs or ask your guests to stand if it’s a small group and a shorter ceremony. With an outdoor setting amongst the mountains, there will be no need for big decorations or altar pieces as you won’t want to obstruct the beautiful views. However, if you’d like a simple arch, many vendors hire them out for around $100-200 a day.

The Paperwork

New Zealand’s cost for a marriage license is quite minimal compared to other countries and they don’t come with any crazy hoops to jump through. If you are not from New Zealand, make sure to research the legal requirements for getting married here. Check the latest regulations and plan accordingly. Find more details here

Keep the Guest List Small

One of the advantages of eloping is that you can keep your guest list small, or even non-existent, which can significantly reduce costs. Consider inviting only your closest family members or friends to share in your special day. Fewer guests mean less expense for catering, accommodations, and other wedding-related costs.

If you’re choosing to elope as a couple only, be aware you need two witnesses for a legal wedding in New Zealand, which can often include your photographer. You can also request a witness (possible cost) through your celebrant.

Saving on the Extras

Every little detail adds up. Stick to what’s important to you. Elopements tend to forgo wedding parties, which will save you on extra dresses and gifts. Save money on flowers by selecting a bridal bouquet and boutonniere for the two of you. Bring or make your own table decorations, or simply skip altogether if you aren’t bothered. Hand-make your wedding invitations to add a personal touch without breaking the bank.

Pre-booking Accommodation

Queenstown offers a wide range of accommodation options to fit different budgets. If you have a rewards points credit card, consider saving them for this event. If family are overseas and want to gift a present, ask them to pay for a room. If you are planning to stay a few days, consider spending a bit more for the wedding night and moving to a cheaper choice for the remaining days.

A few lovely and affordable recommendations include Holiday Inn Express (Remarkables Park or downtown Queenstown), Wyndham Garden, QS Marina, Pencarrow Boutique Lodge and Highview Apartments. AirBnB’s are another great option and plentiful in the Queenstown area. Booking well in advance can also help you secure better rates.

Capture the Memories

Hiring a professional photographer is a worthwhile investment. We capture the beauty of your elopement in Queenstown, ensuring that you have stunning memories to cherish forever. Save by selecting shorter (less hours) packages, but always ensure there is plenty of time for a scenic couple shoot.

Be Savvy with Your Wedding Attire

Walking into a bridal store and looking at prices can be somewhat overwhelming. Add in fittings, and alterations and watch the price increase. Search for second-hand dresses, consider hiring a dress or find your dress online. Plenty of online retailers offer simple, yet stunning white (if that’s what you want) dresses. Use the filter tab to select the length and colour you want for your big day. My wife found her elopement dress online for just $26.

By staying away from the word wedding, it’s easy to find affordable dresses and suits. Use Pinterest to search for the look you desire and make sure to choose your attire that represents your style as well as comfort.

Food and Drinks

Keep it simple when it comes to catering. Consider a picnic-style meal or a casual restaurant reception with a limited menu. Alternatively, you can opt for a romantic private dinner for two. Queenstown offers a wide range of dining options to suit various budgets.

Transportation

As soon as your accommodation and flights are booked, hire a rental car. The earlier, the better options and you’ll find better prices. Often the photographer can pick you up and drop you off on your wedding day. Coordinate this with them if you’d prefer not to drive your own vehicle. Taxis and Uber are available in Queenstown but charge high fees.

Eloping in Queenstown can be a budget-friendly and unforgettable experience. By carefully planning your elopement, choosing the right season, keeping your guest list small, and exploring cost-effective options, you can create a magical and memorable wedding day without breaking the bank.

Embrace the beauty of Queenstown and let your love story unfold against the backdrop of one of the most stunning destinations in the world.
